March For Life 2012

This year, several friends and family members, including myself, went on a twenty four hour pilgrimage, to our nation's capitol, and participated in the national protest against legalized abortion. It was a memorable day. It started with a church service. We then attended a pro-life prayer service at the Capitol. After a brief respite at the Smithsonian for lunch, we joined ranks with multiple thousands of others as we marched down the streets of Washington DC, past the Capitol, Congress and Senate office buildings, and ended up in front of the Supreme Court, all while the Washington Monument loomed over us, half obscured in the clouds and fog. It seemed as if the very heavens were weeping for the many lives that have been lost as we walked through the rain and the mist. These lost lives have not gone unnoticed or not protested. I was grateful to be able to come together with others in this land to raise our collective voices and signs against the injustice that this nation allows against the most innocent creatures that call Earth home, the little ones in the womb, the tiny souls that cannot raise their own voices against those who seek to do them harm.

Sledding At Bentley

This morning, after the three-inch snowfall we received over night, I was given the chance to go sledding with our neighbors on a Bentley slope. Afterwards, all of us were able to enjoy a hot cup of cocoa and the warmth of a house.

Luke Leaves For Rochester

Yesterday morning Luke left for upstate NY, where he will be persuing a three-year long Pediatric Nurse Practioner degree at Rochester Medical School. He drove off inhis heavily loaded down car, which with the help of his friend Zach and brother Jacob, has a newly installed engine in it. Unlike down here at Bentley, there is much snow up there, so the first thing Luke had to do is shovel the walk at his apartment. The whole family appreciates Luke's great determination, when it comes to his scholastic studies, and his zeal for life. Luke patiently awaits the day when he can give back to the medical community which gave so much to him when he was born three months early. Go Luke!

Animals Who Will Brave The Winter At Bentley

This winter, which has of yet has been unusually mild, will see the stay of many animals at various spots around Bentley Farm. These chosen few have been selected to stay here and survive amidst the cold elements of winter.

The Humility of Daniel

Humility, as defined by a Christian article I once read, is doing God's will no matter the cost to our personal life or pride. Daniel, among many Biblical men and women, displays a certain affinity for humility. In Daniel Chapter 6 is the well-known story of Daniel in the Lions' Den. In the beginning verses it states that the Persian King set 120 satraps, small-time princes, to rule through his empire, faintly similar to state governors today. Over these he set three administrators, one of which was Daniel. Later, Daniel has proved his exceptional God-given skills in administration, and Darius begins to plan to set Daniel over all the kingdom's rulers. Soon after jealously takes hold in his co-workers, and they search for any cracks in his life, but due to Daniel submitting to God, they find nothing evil about him. But while they are observing Daniel, they realize he prays to God three times everyday out of his window towards Jerusalem. So then they go to the king and by playing upon his pride they convince him to make a irreversible law which orders all of his subjects to pray only to him and if they disobey and pray to another "god" they will be cast into a den of lions, which though sounds strange to modern ears, was most likely a common capitol punishment among the Medes and Persians. So now Daniel, obviously realizing the trap set before him,has two choices, one being obey the king, or he could disobey his boss. But this would end up ruining all he had worked for the larger part of his life and he most likely receive the punishment of death, yet he, by harkening to the calling God had set in his life, would be forced to completely trust God to take care of him. Some of us may think that Daniel could have compromised by praying secretly to God, thus preserving both his life and relationship with God, but for two reasons, this was not a immediate choice to Daniel. One he would be backing down from his enemies and submitting to man, showing his trepidation of earthly power, and two he would be disobeying God out of fear for his personal life. Daniel, being the incredible man of faith he was, chose to not back down from his adversaries and to continue his prayers to his heavenly Father. So when Daniel prays out his window the next day, the satraps and administrators see it and run back to the king to tattletale on Daniel. Then the king was distressed by this and the Bible records in verse 13, "he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him". But at the end of the day the satraps request for him to be thrown into the den of the Lions and as the law was irreversible the king had to give in. Daniel was "thrown" into the lion's Den, most likely through a hole above their cave, which was sealed by a large roundish rock. Afterwards King Darius returns to his palace and passes a sleepless night. Then comes the best part of the story, early in the morning the king runs down to the mouth of the den, and calls down to Daniel as written in verse 19, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?" Daniel promplty replies telling of how the Lord had sent his angel to close the mouth of the lions. The king is overjoyed, and orders for Daniel to be hauled up. He is examined afterwards, and not a single scratch or bruise is found on his body. Then, the king's anger grows toward the men who has accused Daniel of praying to God, and then are themselves, along with their families, thrown into the den by the command of the king. But a very interesting note is shown afterwards in the Book of Daniel, and it says in verse 20, "And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones". The hunger of the lions was so great that the lions crushed all of the bones in the many bodies thrown down to them, before they even touched the floor of their den. But the retribution and reward of Daniel's remarkable faith does not end there. The king then writes a new decree to all nations, which is recorded as follows in verses 26 and 27, “For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed,his dominion will never end. He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.” Thus ends Chapter 6, Daniel through great trust in God, and obedience to the calling of God in his life, brings the most powerful man in the earth at the time, to a faith in God. God really does use all things for His glory. In our lives we will face our own lions and satraps, but and we must learn from Daniel's example which is to gird ourselves with humility and obedience. For when we do this, we allow the mouths of our own ferocious "lions" to be shut, our "satraps" punished, and God's glory to be made known in a greater way.

Christmas At Bentley

Christmas day is always a special day at home. It is filled with laughter, many presents, great food, tradition, and love. Thankfully this year everyone was home for Christmas, Sarah and Adam from Kansas, and Nate and Hannah from NYC. We were also glad to have our "Uncle" Clarence join us for the day's activities. It was indeed a very Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas Friends and Family,

As the youngest of the eight, I still very much enjoy the gifts that are given and received at Christmas. I also am excited because this Christmas means that all my siblings will be back on Bentley Farm at the same time! Yet, in the midst of all this excitement, the words of the band, Downhere, speak of an even more awesome joy:

Follow the star to a place unexpected, would you believe after all we've projected, a child in a manger, lowly and small, the weakest of all, unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother’s shawl. Just a child - is this who we’ve waited for?

Sarah is happily married to her best friend, Adam, and now is almost five months pregnant with a little baby girl. She continues as a high school chemistry teacher in Kansas. She, Rebecca, and Hannah reunited for some sister-time in May and went on a camping trip together in the Adirondacks. In the spring, Sarah and Adam bought a house in Wichita which they spent four months fixing (with much help) into a home. The two of them really enjoy spending time with their new neighbors and are having fun doing lots of hosting in their new home. Sarah blogs at www.cityhouseontheprairie.blogspot.com

When I was eight, Isaac left home full of hopes and dreams. Now six years later, Dr. Isaac Angell returned to Bentley Farm, married to his Allie, expecting a baby girl in January, and so grateful for this cascade of blessings. He and Allie live at the other end of Bentley Lane, about a five minute walk from our house. We visit back and forth a lot. He works with a man he really admires, Dr. Hart, and enjoys his veterinary practice. When he is not at the office or out on a farm call, Isaac loves to work with Allie around Bentley Farm getting it back into production. Their vegetable garden out- produced ours this summer! And thanks to their labors, our fields are once again populated with Ayrshire cows.

I really grew in respect for my brother Nate this year. Nate was so happy to be engaged to Anna, and his heart broke when the relationship ended this summer. Even through this difficult time, Nate has continued to look to God for strength. He still works as an engineering analyst for Black and Veatch focusing on renewable energy in New York City, and has an apartment on the Upper West Side. I am happy when he comes up on the weekends to visit the farm and work with me doing my farm chores. I recently had the opportunity to spend a weekend with Nate in the city and return the favor.

Luke took a break from his academic careet spending the summer and fall with us. He is so enthusiastic about life which means a lot to all of us. In January, he is leaving for the University of Rochester where he will be in a pediatric nurse practitioner program. Luke is so grateful to the medical personnel that helped him after he was born three months early; it is his hope to pass on the blessings of life to the next generation. Luke loves farming as well, and has worked since graduating as a herd manager at a nearby country estate farm. I don’t think anyone is happier in the driver’s seat of a John Deere, working on various projects around the farm, than my brother Luke.

Hannah just glows these days. Her boyfriend, Eric, my good friend as well, is a big part of her joy. Eric was Luke and Isaac’s roommate at Cornell. I find Hannah to be a real ball of energy. Upon graduation, she moved to Brooklyn with long-time friend, Katie Teubl. Hannah works for KPMG, an accounting firm, on her way to becoming a Certified Public Accountant. She never seems to tire as she travels the land with her company. She is home most every weekend with energy still to spare. Hannah loves spending quality time with her two wonderful sisters, Rebecca and Allie.

Jacob values his relationships with his friends, many of whom are older mentors. He made a new friend this year, George Allen. Our whole family was so grateful when George and his wife, Liz, bought Bentley Farm in February. George and Liz have a love for the farm just as we do. Jacob worked on the farm for the whole summer. Jacob applies the same determination and perseverance to his academic work as he does to his farm work. He is now attending Dutchess Community College laboring through his double dose of chemistry and biology. This summer, Jacob and Hannah flew out to Kansas to help Sarah and Adam work on the floors for their new house.

Rebecca really enjoys the sport team experience. She has played volleyball in the spring, soccer in the fall, and now basketball. Her beloved “sheepies” are still very much alive and baaing. Under Rebecca’s supervision her oldest ewe gave birth to two beautiful lambs, Ramekin and Raquel. Rebecca is anticipating studying nursing in college. Rebecca blesses me and the family with her constant kindness, patience and service.

As for me, I played baseball on a team in the spring and worked in the cool hours of the summer mornings weed-whacking on the farm. When Jacob became busy with college studies, I took over his role as landscaper. My greatest adventure of the summer came when I flew out to Kansas by myself and had a blast going to a summer camp with Adam and visiting Sarah and Adam’s home afterward. My hobby remains building with Lego, and I have entered two more competitions as I continue to enjoy this medium of art. I like learning more about the way things work.

Mom and Dad are excited to be welcoming their first grandchildren into the family. We all look to Dad for his wisdom, and revere Mom for her service and love as she continues to teach Rebecca and me at home and visit and encourage her kids spread across the country. Dad has remained serving on several local town committees, and Mom still devotedly cares for our beloved cousin, Maryella, who just turned 94. We very much continue to enjoy having our dear Grandma next door and she amazes us with all sorts of homemade treats from her kitchen.

Reflecting upon Christ entering the world as one of us, I am filled with joy and hope. This Jesus, the servant king, the unlikely hero, the peaceful deliverer, is indeed the One we have waited for!

This weekend I left for the city and spent the weekend with brother Nate.

Several highlights were:

-Going to the super-crowded Lego store near Rockefeller Center.

-Visiting Nate's friends, the Cates, and Nathan came with us on some of our adventures.

-Traveling through the city by foot.

-Going to the Holiday Train Show at the NY Botanical Gardens, were replicas of buildings were built with nuts, twigs, gourds, etc.

-Grinding cinnamon at the Gingerbread Adventure with a mortar and pestle.

-Taking a tour around the gardens on a tram.

-Going to a concert where a orchestra and choir played Bach's Magnificat and Handel's Messiah, it was easily one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

-Attending Central Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning.

-Hanging out with my big brother Nate.

Though I had a great time, I have to say, I am glad I live in the countryside of the Hudson Valley.

Thanksgiving Time At Bentley

This Thanksgiving time passed pleasantly, with a visit from Uncle Sam's family, and our "Uncle" Clarence joining us as well. My mother really out did herself this year with the amount of food that was made. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, because it makes us step back and look at all the many blesses God has so bountifully given us.

94 Years and Counting!

Maryella, our elderly cousin, who is a real joy and gift to our family, is known to light up a room with her smile, joined the small group of 94 year olds in the world.

This year amidst a specially ordered ham and potato dinner, a cozy Swedish sweater, a pink birthday cake, and a back blanket, and good cheer, Maryella beamed happily throughout the events of the night. Although Maryella suffers from short term memory loss, you could ask her all through the day and she knew that this day was her special day.

Ten Steps To Get A Christmas Tree

Walk around and look for the perfect Christmas tree.

Cut it down with a sharp saw.

Get a free cup of hot chocolate after buying it, tie the tree to the car and go home!

Turkey Trot 5K

Early Thanksgiving morning, Nate, Rebecca, and I all left for a 5K race in a nearby town. Nate had his best time yet, pulling in at 23:30, only 5 minutes after the first place winner. Afterwards we came home for a pre-Thanksgiving breakfast.

Festival Of Trees-Lego Artist Challenge 2011

This year, my good friend and I entered this competition and both tied for first place, it was a real blast to go down there and see a professional Lego hobbyist's creations and to see the other entries. After dropping off our creations at the competition, for viewing and judging, we stopped for some great pizza. On Sunday we went back down to find out the results and pick up our creations, I was thrilled to be able to talk to the adult Lego hobbyist, Bill Probert. Overall it was a wonderful time.

This beautiful, strange for this time of year, blanket of 19 inches of snow shut off power for four days. However, even though we lost power we gained back something that we lose in this world of internet and technology. For example the night we lost power most of the family sat in the living room, a single candle lighting the room, and talked for a long time, while we would usually be busy with all the benefits of electricity and internet. Though when it came back on it was met with much cheer and joy.

Right now, we are experiencing the earliest minor snowstorm that I can remember.An d we do not even have our woodstove going yet!

Earlier this week, Mom and Dad had their annual Columbus Day bike ride on the nearby Railtrail. They biked eight miles to a town where they had lunch at a local eatery, and then did some early Christmas shopping. After bicycling another eight miles back to the parking lot over the asphalt trail, they came refreshed.

Tonight Dad, Mom, Maryella, and I all went up to Stanfordville and were highly entertained by the acts and antics of the Vidbel Circus which had came to town. Among the many acts, clowns, horse riders, aerial trapese, acrobatics, a human slinky, magicians, and highly trained dogs, was a sense of general enthusiasum among the small town folk.

The family had another wonderful and successful year at the Dutchess County Fair, our Ayrshire cattle won many a blue ribbon, and the whole family, except Sarah and Hannah, was able to participate in the many fun events of the fair.

This past weekend, Jacob, Luke and I drove to Maine to visit college friends. The highlights of the trip included: attending the Topsham County Fair, watching a draft horse pull, observing the logging industry, finding moose, tubing and skiing on the lake, enjoying our hosts' wonderful hospitality, spending time with both old and new friends.

It is hard to believe that the baby of the family turned 14 today! Caleb enjoyed a special request meal with family and friends. After dinner, the evening was filled with playing Trac Ball, eating cake, being entertained by super loud games of Pit, and, of course, assembling his new Lego sets.

Vacation in Lake George

After the end of our lovely day at Tea Island, Rebecca, Dad, Mom, and I stayed up a Lake George for a two-day vacation, as my father had a business meeting the second day in the same area.

Highlights:
Parasailing hundreds of feet above the beautiful waters of Lake George.

Watching the Adirondack Aerial Assualt Beach Vault.

Playing miniature golf at Pirate's Cove, were for the first time in my life I tied Dad 47 to 47!

Dining at the Boathouse, a great restaurant.

Visiting the Saratoga battlefield and seeing a small scale version of one of the battles.

Attending Quaker meeting at Saratoga.

Eating a great lunch, courtesy of Catherine's in the Park, with and Mom by the side of Victoria Pool.

Swimming in Victoria Pool, which was situated in the middle of a large and gorgeous courtyard.

Tea Island, Lake George - 2011 Edition

On one of the hottest days of the year, it could not have been more perfect to spend the day at Lake George! This year included Anna's first introduction to Tea Island, many successful attempts at water skiing, leaping off Calf's Pen, adventurous boat rides, a multi-celebratory cake and breathing deep the Adirondack air. The Power of God

I am amazed daily by the power of God, made evident in the physical manifestation of his creation. When reading through the Bible, the numerous supernatural acts that God performs is amazing and really makes you wonder about how powerful our God really is. For instance God made the entire universe out of nothingness. God spoke every thing into being, he said, "Let there be light" and behold there was light. Genesis repeatedly tells us, "God said" and then lists an miraculous event. We all have feared different things at different times, but when we realize that our eternal and all powerful God can just speak and the whole universe obeys his command, there is little to fear. God is in control, and nothing will ever be able to change that simple, yet complex, and completely true fact.

Jacob recently bought a new cattle trailer and brought a few of our cows back to the farm that had been vacationing at a neighbor's farm. They came back for training and preparation for the upcoming Dutchess County Fair.

Old Cowtown Museum, Wichita, Kansas

Last Sunday, after church, Sarah, Adam, and I went to the Old Cowtown Museum, an historic western town, located in Wichita. We all enjoyed an step back in time and I was astounded by Cowtown. For the most part, the buildings were all moved from different locations were they had rested for an hundred years or so and moved to the museum. Camp Quaker Haven, Arkansas City, Kansas

Last Tuesday at around 7am I left from the airport in a Boeing 717 for Atlanta. Upon arrival I switched flights and took off for the Wichita Airport . Sarah picked me up and we went to Spangles, a fifties style fast food restaurant, and enjoyed delicious burgers there. Then we drove to Camp Quaker Haven where Adam was the counselor of Cabin 3, my cabin. I spent four days there and enjoyed playing many fun games, worshiping in the chapel, and making new friends. CQH was a great place. It has a beautiful view of the Arkansas River. My cabin, the smallest there with only six people, came in second overall, in the boy's division, in the camp games. I hope to return next year as I have many wonderful memories of CQH.

Bunk beds, where we slept for very limited times, usually getting only seven hours of sleep -- I know this may sound like a lot, but we were kept extremely busy during the other 17 hours.

Our Grandad, Stephen Leroy Angell, September 3, 1919 - May 6, 2011

Growing up, Grandad lived just down the road. Often as kids, we would walk down the narrow trail in the woods that meandered to his house. I remember as a young boy taking that trip to spend a special afternoon with Grandad playing a board game, or looking at his collection of artifacts from his foreign travels. When Grandad was home on Bentley Farm, he would usually join us for supper, walking up that same footpath from his house to ours, and arriving in his trademark Hawaiian shirt.

Those evenings were special and memorable. Grandad was a fun character or as he would put it "a scalawag"! Grandad would rough house with us kids, putting us in "traps" and not letting us go until we said "Uncle!". Grandad would sometimes surprise us, with pieces of his favorite cinnamon gum or little bars of soap or bottles of shampoo from his travels abroad. Or he would sometimes really surprise us by offering us a portion of dandelion salad or some other tasty culinary creation. Grandad was a gentle soul. He would hold the youngest member of our growing family in the rocking chair after dinner and usually both of them would be asleep by the end of the evening. During family devotions, Grandad loved to sing and to harmonize. Two of his favorite songs were "Fairest Lord Jesus" and "Seek Ye First (the Kingdom of God)". On one particular evening, Sarah was playing guitar and softly sang to us a song that touched Grandad's heart--so much so that he requested that Sarah play and sing the song in his memory when he passed away. That time has come and Sarah is now living in Kansas, but the words remain among us.

And Jesus said "Come to the waters

I've felt every tear drop

When in darkness you cried.

And I strove to remind you,

That for those tears I died."

A decade or so ago, Grandad sold his house and moved to a retirement community outside Philadelphia. The narrow path between our houses is now hidden by brambles. His old house is for sale again. But even though this life is transient, physical distance can separate us, and death and decay is a present reality, our hope is that Grandad heard choirs of angels singing the words of this song he loved so as he breathed his last--and that he joined their voices in perfect harmony.

We'll miss you Grandad!

A group of people are lead by a tour guide through a Russian art museum. One man in the group, a professional chess player, takes a special interest in a painting called Checkmate in the art gallery. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered. The title of the painting, “Checkmate,” indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has no more moves. The chess player analyzes the painting for a long time, and the group moves on without him. Then suddenly he steps back, flabbergasted. “It’s wrong!” he exclaims. “There’s one more move.” He runs to his group and together they look at the painting. “We have to contact the painter,” the chess champion says. “It’s not checkmate. The King has one more move which will let him win!”

When Jesus was put to death on the cross it seemed to his friends and disciples that another good and miraculous man had come and died just like all other men. It also probably seemed that the one man who could save humanity had been killed. It seemed like the Devil had won and defeated Jesus Christ and put him under death's cold power. But when Jesus rose a few days later he showed to the whole entire world that absolutely nothing could hold him! He had that last move, the move which with he conquered death and hell. The greatest crime of man had just been turned into the greatest victory of God!

Rebecca had her 16th birthday and to celebrate she had her friends over for a picnic/birthday party! Following the girls' indulgence in good food, they played kickball with the rest of the family. After that, we all ate Rebecca's special order of Hershey's ice-cream cake and then opened many wonderful gifts from friends and family alike.

It appears Rebecca just fell off the front of the gator due to Emily's crazy driving...

All I can say is I probably won't be doing that at my 16th birthday party!

I do not know what is so terrifying about a smirking girl...oh well.

This weekend among many activites the kitchen cabinets and cupboards were installed to the great delight of the whole family. The cabinets are beautiful and shine with a brilliance that comes only from pure cherry wood. The cabinets themselves are all handmade and crafted by our carpentorial genius, Mr. Clegg. One of other amazing things about them is that they all came from a grand old cherry tree in the backyard.

This Saturday I woke up bright and early and went to set up a farm display with my friend Isaac and his dad. We formed bright green hills and long brown roads out of sawdust. We also put up fences and placed buildings and all kinds of vehicles from trucks to tractors on the specified areas. We received 3rd and had a great time enjoying our country scenery. The "farm" was owned by a rich retired oil baron who owned over 35 tractors, believe me tractors are not cheap, and a fine selection of bovines.

This morning Rebecca went out to her sheep pen and found a wee lamb outside the sheep pen and another on its way out of its momma. They are both healthy and sucking well. These are Rebecca's first twins and so she gave them special names. The ram is named Ramekin, and the ewe is Raquel (a Spanish name meaning "ewe"). This birthing is a sure sign that spring is coming for when the lambs frisk the long grass will swish.

I write this blog post with electricity from the generator pumping power into the computer. Around 4'o clock this morning the electric lines where torn down somewhere and we lost power. This ice storm also brought down many branches and halves of trees all over the farm. But in the midst of all this wintry chaos the ice so beautifully placed on the trees almost makes it all worth it.

Grandma Turns 81!

Spring is Coming!

This week we reached highs of 60 degrees. The 16 inches of snow that we have accumulated over the months of January and early February have been reduced to just mere inches here and there. The cool breeze brings promises of budding flowers and buzzing bees. The gentle sun that sends its rays to this frozen ground melting the snow and making the lanes of Bentley visible again. But while some snow lingers on the ground I can see the promise of spring coming to bring colorful life once more to the grassy fields of Bentley Farm.

Gold in the City

On Friday morning Dad, my friend Isaac, and I journeyed down to NYC for a long awaited visit to the Federal Gold Reserve of New York. Going past the Washington Bridge we could see the Little Red Lighthouse that the school children of New York saved from destruction. When we arrived we toured the building and were taken 5 stories under the city to the vault. We saw over 50 billion dollars worth of gold bullion bricks and received souvenirs of old shredded dollar bills. Another interesting fact that we found out was that 95% of the gold belonged to foreign nations who had sent it there for safe keeping. The rest of the day's highlights were;

1. Going to the FAO Schwartz toy store and seeing all their merchandise.

2. Eating lunch with Sean Rubin at Lindy's diner on the outskirts of the theater district.

3. Visiting the Lego store right next to Rockefeller center and viewing all the new sets.

4. Walking through Central Park and seeing the famous statue of Balto the huskie who led the teams of dogs through miles of blizzard and hazard to reach the children of Nome with the precious diphtheria antitoxin.

5. Going to the Museum of Natural History and looking at all the amazing animals and cultures that make up this amazing world.

6. Eating burgers at Nathaniel's apartment in Upper West Side.

7. Coming home from a great day of fun, learning, seeing the sights of the city, and falling asleep in my bed in the wonderful countryside.

While most ordinary folks may have a house warming after moving into a new neighborhood, we decided to mix things up a bit and have an apartment chilling with all our cool friends (no pun intended of course). The result: a wintry mix of Times Square church, delightful pastries, ice skating gone happily awry, apartment-made concoctions, and grocery shopping at West Market and Fairway for our party of 15.

Growing up, I never envisioned myself living in New York City. In fact, I liked to make fun of the "city slickers" who did, and was relieved to return to the farm after a day trip or commute through. But as time goes on, I've come to realize that while NYC may lack the country landscape (with the exception of Central Park's natural beauty), there's a human ecology and presence that brings a new perspective to my love of agriculture. Seeds can be sown in human hearts, just like on fertile soil. In many ways, my experience has reinforced the concept that Bentley Farm is just as much an idea as a place. Bentley Farm has informed my way of looking at the world, a way of seeing people and environments as more than just a transient background, but as beautiful creation containing tremendous potential. There's an opportunity in each season of life and proximal location to plant, to cultivate and to grow. For that realization, I'm quite grateful.

On Sunday my friend invited me to go sledding with him at the Stanford Town Hall. The steep hill's snow was packed down which made the sledding conditions great. I especially enjoyed flying down the hill on a tobaggon with my friend and then both of us getting bucked off the sled and landing on our stomachs.

Ice and Snow

Yesterday Andy and Chris Blue, Ben Murphy, and I had a small skating party on the Bentley Farm's frozen pond. We played a intense round of hockey in which Chris and Ben beat Andy and me 15-8. After ice skating we went for a winter exploration trip on the trails of Bentley. Overall we had a great time of fun, fellowship and laughter.
